Children's dentistry

Preventative dental care for young children is essential, not only to keep their current teeth healthy, but also to encourage them into good habits when it comes to maintaining oral health and keeping regular dental appointments in later life.

Here at Chalkwell Dental, we recognise the importance of monitoring your child’s teeth and gums and encouraging them with their personal oral care. You will find that our friendly dentists and hygienists will do all that they can to help your children feel confident and happy during their appointments and to help re-inforce the guidance you are providing at home.

Children's dentistry FAQs

At what age should a child’s dental care begin?

We generally recommend bringing your child to see us at around one year of age. Although it is unlikely that there will be any problems at this stage, it helps to accustom the child to the sights, sounds and smells of a dental surgery and helps ‘normalise’ the experience. It is generally thought that early exposure to a dental practice minimises the likelihood of dental phobia as children grow older.

Is your child afraid of the dentist?

If so, this is not uncommon and may well be the result of a less than pleasant previous experience at another practice. We can assure you that we will take good care of your child and speak to them in a respectful and friendly manner. We find that even the most nervous young patients start to relax using this friendly and informative approach.

Can’t stop your child eating a high sugar diet?

Tooth decay is one of the main reasons why children have to have surgery in hospital, in order to extract badly decayed teeth. As parents, we have a responsibility to monitor their sugar intake, although, of course, we can’t be with them for 24 hours a day as they get older.

To assist, we recommend that your child visits our dental hygienist. Whilst their role involves monitoring for and treating gum problems, the hygienist also has an important educational role to play which can be especially effective with young children and can encourage a better diet and better tooth cleaning methods. Many children who ignore their parent’s advice will often listen and take notice of a clinician in a professional capacity.
